Smile Design Support
Every successful restorative journey begins with a clear vision. At Avant Garde Dental Laboratory, every case is founded on Digital Smile Design (DSD) – the gold standard in facially-driven smile design, creating a blueprint for predictable, functional and aesthetic results before treatment begins.
By starting with the end in mind and aligning the clinician, laboratory and patient around the desired outcome, Smile Design provides greater clarity, confidence and control throughout the treatment journey.

Our Smile Design Solutions
From initial patient visualisation through to final restorative planning, our Smile Design services provide a facially-guided approach tailored to each patient’s needs.
Using your clinical records and advanced software such as Exocad, we create a digital design based on the patient’s facial features, anatomy and treatment goals. This establishes the ideal tooth position, proportions and gingival architecture, creating a clear blueprint for the treatment pathway.
Our Smile Design lab services:
Motivational Smile Design
Designed to inspire and engage the patient at the start of their journey.
This stage includes a realistic visualisation of the proposed outcome and a motivational mock up STL for the Smile Test Drive. It helps patients understand what may be possible while establishing a shared vision before detailed treatment planning begins. For practices with in-house functionality, we can also provide STL files for immediate chairside printing.
Biofunctional / Invasive Smile Design
Designed around biological, functional and restorative requirements.
Once the patient is ready to proceed, the design is refined to define the ideal tooth position and determine the most appropriate treatment pathway, whether that involves orthodontics, adhesive dentistry, implants or a multidisciplinary approach.
Final Restorative Design
The exact blueprint for treatment and restoration.
The final design becomes the definitive blueprint for treatment, with STL files used to create prototypes, provisionals or temporary restorations that guide each clinical stage. This ensures the final result remains predictable, repeatable and faithful to the original facially-guided plan, giving clinicians greater clarity and patients greater confidence.

Suitable Cases
Smile Design is not only for full cosmetic makeovers. It can support any case where aesthetics, function or long-term stability are key considerations.
It can support cases involving:
- Orthodontics
- Restorative and adhesive dentistry
- Implant treatment
- Periodontal and soft tissue procedures
- Multidisciplinary treatment planning
Starting with the end result in mind allows clinicians to make clearer decisions around treatment sequencing and approach, from orthodontic alignment and gingival recontouring to conservative additive dentistry and implant treatment.
For comprehensive cases, this creates a clearer, more confident and predictable treatment journey.

Common FAQs
Frequently Asked Question
What records are required to begin a Smile Design?
For the most accurate facially-guided design, we recommend a complete digital record set, including:
- High quality extraoral and intraoral photographs
- Smile and facial videos
- Intraoral scans
- Relevant radiographs, including bitewings, periapicals or CBCT where indicated
- Facial scans, where available
The quality and completeness of the records provided directly impacts the accuracy of the final design.
Can I request a Smile Design before completing the patient’s treatment?
Yes. Smile design should ideally begin at the start of the treatment journey. By starting with the end result in mind, every clinical decision can be planned around the final outcome.
This creates a clearer and more predictable sequence, whether the patient requires orthodontics, periodontal treatment, implant placement, restorative dentistry or a combination of treatments.
How will I receive the Smile Design?
We offer flexible workflows to suit your practice.
You can receive:
- A 3D printed Smile Test Drive for use in the practice
- STL files for in-house printing
- Digital presentations and realistic smile simulations
- AI generated visualisations to support patient communication
This allows you to choose the workflow that works best for your team, technology and patient journey.
Is Smile Design only suitable for cosmetic veneer cases?
No. Smile design can support any treatment that changes tooth position, shape, gingival architecture, function or overall smile aesthetics. This includes orthodontic, implant, restorative, adhesive, periodontal and multidisciplinary cases.
Whatever the complexity, a facially-guided plan provides a clear roadmap from diagnosis to the final result.
Why should I use a laboratory for Smile Design rather than planning the case myself?
A modern digital laboratory should be more than a restoration provider. It should be an extension of your clinical team. Our experienced CAD designers and clinical support team collaborate with you to bring together facial aesthetics, function, biology and restorative principles.
This additional layer of expertise can help identify challenges earlier, improve communication across the treatment team and create more predictable outcomes for patients.
How long does a Smile Design take?
Our Smile Design lab services have a turnaround time of 24–72 hours, allowing you to plan your patient journey accordingly.
Can changes be made to the design?
Yes. Once your Smile Design is ready, you will be notified via the online portal and given 72 hours to review and approve the design.
You can provide feedback during this review period, and the design will not progress without your approval.
Can your team help me decide which Smile Design solution I need?
Yes. Clinical support is available to all lab users. If you’re unsure which solution is most appropriate, our team can advise on the best approach for your case, from motivational through to comprehensive or final restorative design.
Can Smile Design be used to plan implant placement and implant restorations?
Yes. Smile Design can be used to support implant planning and implant restorations, helping to establish the desired final result before treatment begins.
Implant planning is available as part of the Smile Design service and as a separate workflow.
