Common FAQs
Frequently Asked Question
What information do I need to provide for a CAD/CAM case?
For the most accurate result, please provide a complete digital record set, including:
- Intraoral scans
- A detailed laboratory prescription
- Opposing arch and bite scans
- Relevant clinical photographs
- Radiographs where indicated
Complete, high quality records allow our designers to plan and manufacture your restoration with greater precision.
Can I use your CAD design service if my practice has its own milling machine or 3D printer?
Yes. You can use Avant Garde solely for expert digital design while continuing to manufacture in house.
Our CAD designers can provide production-ready STL files for milling or 3D printing, giving you access to specialist design expertise without changing your existing workflow.
Do I need to book a collaborative CAD design session?
No. Collaborative design sessions are available for clinicians who want to develop and review the restoration with a CAD designer in real time.
Alternatively, you can upload your case through the Avant Garde Digital Portal. Our team will review your records, contact you if clarification is required and complete the design according to your prescription.
What can be produced using your CAD/CAM service?
Our digital workflows support a comprehensive range of restorations and appliances, including:
- Crowns, veneers, inlays and onlays
- Bridges and implant restorations
- Provisionals and full arch prostheses
- Surgical guides
- Splints and bite guards
- Digital dentures
- Other digitally designed appliances and laboratory components
If your case can be digitally designed, our team can advise on the most appropriate workflow.
Can I review and approve the CAD design before manufacture?
Yes. You can review the digital design before it progresses to manufacture and provide feedback or request changes where required. Design revisions are included as part of the service, helping ensure the approved design meets your clinical requirements before production begins.
Which materials and manufacturing technologies do you use?
We work with a wide range of leading CAD/CAM materials, including zirconia, IPS e.max lithium disilicate, feldspathic ceramics, PMMA and composite materials.
Each material and manufacturing method is selected around the clinical indication, balancing strength, aesthetics, accuracy and long term performance. Our advanced milling and 3D printing technology allows us to deliver consistent, highly precise restorations across a wide range of workflows.
Can you help me choose the right material or workflow?
Absolutely. Our experienced CAD designers and technicians can review your case before production begins. We can advise on restorative design, material selection and the most appropriate manufacturing workflow to support a predictable functional and aesthetic outcome.
What is the turnaround time for a CAD/CAM case?
For live collaborative CAD/CAM sessions, the design is completed with you during the session. For cases submitted through the digital portal, please allow up to 72 hours for the design.
If you have a time-sensitive case, please speak to our team about available priority workflows.
Which intraoral scanners and file formats do you accept?
We accept files from common intraoral scanning systems, including iTero, 3Shape and Shining, as well as STL files uploaded directly through the Avant Garde Digital Portal.
Can you work with all implant systems?
Yes. Our team can support CAD/CAM workflows across a range of implant systems.
For implant cases, please provide the relevant implant system and component information so our team can ensure the correct workflow and components are used.
What records are required for an implant CAD/CAM case?
Implant cases require the usual digital records, alongside additional information where indicated, including CBCT scans and details of the implant system, platform and scan body.
Additional records may also be required depending on the case, such as tissue scans, provisional designs or information relating to the intended emergence profile.
Can you match an existing restoration or natural tooth shade?
Yes. We can support shade matching for existing restorations and natural teeth. For highly aesthetic cases, providing detailed clinical photographs and accurate shade information helps our team achieve the best possible match.
Do you offer urgent or priority CAD/CAM workflows?
Yes. Priority workflows are available for time-sensitive cases. Please contact our team to discuss your requirements and available turnaround options.
What happens if the restoration requires adjustment or a remake?
If a restoration requires an adjustment or remake due to an issue on our side, we will remake and resend it on an expedited basis. Our team will support you throughout the process to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
Can you support me with my first digital or in house manufacturing case?
Yes. Our team can provide clinical and technical support if you’re introducing digital design, milling or 3D printing into your practice. We can help you navigate the workflow, review your case and advise on the most appropriate design, material and production approach.
