Common FAQs
Frequently Asked Question
What records are required for a denture case?
The records required depend on the type of denture and the clinical workflow. Depending on the case, these may include:
- Intraoral scans or conventional impressions
- Opposing arch records
- Accurate bite or jaw relationship records
- Clinical photographs
- A detailed laboratory prescription
- Existing dentures or prostheses where replacement or duplication is required
Our team can advise on the appropriate records when reviewing the case.
Can every denture case be completed through a fully digital workflow?
Not every case is suitable for a completely digital workflow. While many dentures can be designed and manufactured digitally, some clinical situations may still require conventional impressions, additional bite records, try-in stages or other clinical appointments.
Our team will review the case and advise on the most appropriate workflow.
Can I submit a fully digital removable appliance case?
Yes. Cases can be submitted through the Avant Garde Digital Portal using intraoral scans, clinical photographs, bite records and a detailed digital prescription. Our team will then design and manufacture the appliance using the most appropriate digital workflow and production method.
Some clinical situations may still require additional records or conventional stages, which our team will advise on after reviewing the case.
Can you provide STL files for in house production?
Yes. For suitable appliances and compatible manufacturing systems, we can provide production ready STL files for in house 3D printing.
Alternatively, Avant Garde can manage the complete process, including design, production, finishing and delivery.
What records are required for an occlusal splint?
For an occlusal splint, we recommend providing:
- Upper and lower intraoral scans or impressions
- An accurate bite record
- A completed laboratory prescription
- The prescribed appliance design
- Any relevant functional or clinical information
Complete records allow our team to design the appliance around the clinician’s treatment objectives and the patient’s occlusion.
How do I choose between a Michigan splint, Tanner appliance, B Splint or night guard?
The appropriate appliance depends on the patient’s diagnosis, occlusal requirements and treatment objectives. The appliance should be prescribed by the treating clinician.
Our team can then advise on the appropriate design and manufacturing workflow based on the prescription.
Which materials and technologies do you use?
We use validated materials, advanced CAD software and modern milling and 3D printing technologies according to the appliance and clinical indication.
Selected digital denture and flexible prosthesis workflows use advanced additive manufacturing systems, including SprintRay technology. Our team selects the most appropriate material and manufacturing method based on fit, durability, comfort and intended clinical use.
Can you integrate with our existing digital workflow?
Yes. Where systems and file formats are compatible, we can work alongside your existing scanner, design software, AI assisted platform or in house 3D printing equipment.
We can provide design support, completed appliances or suitable production ready files depending on your requirements.
Can I review the digital design before manufacture?
Yes. Where the workflow allows, clinicians can review the digital design before manufacture and provide feedback on aspects such as tooth position, appliance form and occlusion.
Our team can advise which stages are available for review depending on the appliance and workflow.
What is the turnaround time?
Turnaround depends on the type and complexity of the appliance and the workflow being used.
Please contact our team before submitting a time-sensitive case so we can confirm the expected turnaround for your specific appliance.
Can you duplicate an existing denture?
Yes. We can support the duplication or replacement of existing dentures where suitable records are available.
The existing appliance can be used as a reference, while changes to fit, tooth position, occlusion or aesthetics can be incorporated where required.
Can you replace a lost or damaged digital denture?
Yes, where a suitable digital record of the original appliance has been retained.
One of the advantages of digital denture workflows is that the design can be reproduced from the existing digital record, potentially reducing the need to repeat every stage of the original process.
Are printed dentures suitable as definitive restorations?
Yes. Selected printed denture workflows can be used for definitive restorations, subject to the material, appliance design and clinical indication.
Our team can advise on the most appropriate digitally manufactured option for the individual case.
Do you provide repairs, additions and relines?
Yes. We can support denture repairs, additions and relines.
Please provide the relevant clinical information and existing appliance so our team can assess the required work and advise on the appropriate workflow.
Which implant systems and attachment types do you support for overdentures?
We can support implant-retained removable workflows across a range of implant systems and attachment types, subject to compatibility.
Please provide the relevant implant system, components and attachment information when submitting the case so our team can confirm the appropriate workflow.
Can you produce an immediate denture before extractions?
Yes. We can manufacture immediate dentures in advance of the extraction appointment.
The case will require appropriate pre-extraction records and planning to allow the appliance to be designed and manufactured ahead of treatment. Our team can advise on the records required for the specific case.
Can removable appliances form part of a wider restorative plan?
Yes. Removable appliances can be incorporated into treatment plans involving implants, crowns, bridges, veneers and full mouth rehabilitation.
Planning the appliance alongside the wider restorative treatment allows function, aesthetics, protection and long-term maintenance to be considered together.
What happens if the appliance requires adjustment or a remake?
If an appliance requires adjustment, our team will review the case with you to understand the issue and determine the appropriate next steps.
Where a remake is required due to a laboratory issue, we will support the process through to resolution. Complete clinical records and accurate impressions or scans can help us investigate fit and design issues more effectively.
Can you help me choose the right appliance?
Yes. Our team can review the patient’s records and discuss the intended clinical outcome before production begins.
We can advise on the appliance design, digital workflow and manufacturing method, while the final diagnosis and prescription remain the responsibility of the treating clinician.
